Encouraged by "Mr." Bill, NY2U, I went over to an estate sale yesterday to pick up a Tentec Scout 555. It's a really small HF radio with interchangeable modules that let you switch between bands.
Since the Buddistick I ordered was not scheduled to arrive until today, I attached a long speaker-wire cable to the post of the PL-259 cable that was graciously included with the rig.
Calls heard last night include (some I took notes for, others not -- all SSB Phone):
K7MX ; 59x, Florida
W4PBU; Tampa, Florida
W6XX ; 58x, 14.18500 MHz, 02:30, Los Altos, California(!)
W7YV ; 12x, 14.18500 MHz, 02:33, Utah
And today, I went chasing some CW:
W9RGB; 59x, 14.04310 MHz, 14:11, Indiana
K5AY ; 12x, 14.04310 MHz, 14:12, Texas
Most interesting was that W9RGB is the author of lsof, a utility that I use fairly frequently at work! I'll need to learn how to guage RST properly, because at the moment I'm mostly guessing. Oh, I also caught part of the 3730 group, an 80 meter net.
HF is gonna be fun.
